Norfolk Southern had put their line from Childersburg to Birmingham, AL out of service in 1994 due to flood damage from tropical storm Alberto. They re-routed trains via Atlanta, GA and decided to keep it going. Sometime in 1998 NS reopened this line. If NS would had completely ripped up this line here to Birmingham, they would have been in big trouble since this is NS' only by-pass around Atlanta to Macon, GA. |
